The Greek cinema, even though has
not a long international fame and tradition, has produced several movies that
have captured the attention of an international audience and its respect. The
Greek cinema can be roughly divided into two main periods: (i) the Golden Age, which lasts between the 50s
and the 60s when hundreds of movies were produced and are still being
broadcasted on the Greek TV until now, and (ii) the Modern Period, after mid-90s, when a new generation of Greek
directors and actors started producing top quality movies. Two Greek films,
Missing (1982) and Eternity and a Day (1998), have won the Palme d'Or at the
Cannes Film Festival and five Greek films have received nominations for the
Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. During the semester, we are going
to project 4 Greek movies, one each month, two from the so-called Golden Age and two from the modern period.
The first movie that is going to
be projected in 26th of February is from the Modern Period and is called Πολίτικη Κουζίνα - A touch of spice (2003)
Movie description
Life unfolds as both a
present-day adventure and an exploration of memory in A Touch of Spice. Writer
director Tassos Boulmetis, drawing directly on his own memories as a Greek born
in Constantinople (Istanbul), spins for us the tale of Fanis (George Corraface), a renowned
professor of astronomy at the University of Athens who finds himself compelled
to journey back to his Turkish birthplace after decades of exile. The storms of
history caused Fanis and his family to flee Istanbul when he was a little boy.
In so doing, he lost contact with his beloved grandfather (Tassos Bandis), who
not only taught him to cook, but how to think -- to comprehend food itself as a
bible of life, a basis of all philosophy. Fanis is also haunted by the
bittersweet memories of Saime -- the beautiful neighbour who used to dance for
him alone, and was his first love. In keeping with his grandfather’s teachings,
the story unfolds like a meal, in section headed: the preparation, the
appetizers, the main course, the desserts, the presentation. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0378897/
